PlatonConsider the many beautiful things you have seen: a face, a statue, a summer sea. Each is beautiful now and plain later, beautiful to one eye and not another. None of them is Beauty; they only borrow it.
Yet you knew to call them all beautiful. By what? By the one Beauty itself, changeless, which they resemble as shadows resemble what casts them. That, the eidos, is the truly real. The eye sees the copies; only the mind, ascending, reaches the Form.
